Garbage Disposal

What Is a Garbage Disposal?

Serving Ogden, Bountiful, Salt Lake City, Vernal and surrounding areas

A garbage disposal is an electrically powered device mounted under a kitchen sink, between the sink’s drain and the trap. It grinds up food scraps into small particles that can be safely flushed down the plumbing system. This helps reduce kitchen waste and keeps sinks clean and free of clogs. While garbage disposals are convenient and efficient, they can develop problems over time that may require professional attention of which most plumbers cover as a general repair.

We are happy to diagnose your problems and help prevent future issues with some tips on properly using a disposal as testified by Carol, “Came a long way to just look at my disposal. Very friendly. He also fixed it and then showed me how to fix it myself. Now what other company would do that.”

Jammed Disposal

A jammed garbage disposal occurs when something hard like a bone, fruit pit, or piece of silverware blocks the blades from turning. You may hear a humming noise without any grinding or the unit may not operate at all. Trying to force it can burn out the motor. A plumber can safely dislodge the object, reset the unit, and ensure the blades and motor are still in working condition, preventing further damage or injury. Contact a professional to ensure a safe fix to the problem.

Clogs and Slow Draining

Even though disposals break down food waste, certain materials like grease, fibrous vegetables, or large food particles can lead to clogs in the drainpipe. Symptoms include water backing up in the sink, slow draining, or gurgling sounds. Clogs that form deep in the plumbing often can’t be fixed with store bought cleaners. A plumber can clear stubborn blockages without damaging your pipes and offer advice to prevent future clogs.

Unusual Noises

If your garbage disposal starts making grinding, rattling, or screeching sounds, it may be due to a loose part, debris stuck in the unit, or damaged blades. Operating it in this condition can further wear out the system or even cause leaks. A professional plumber can inspect the interior of the unit, remove any foreign objects, tighten components, and determine if parts need replacing.

Foul Odors

Persistent bad smells from a garbage disposal are often caused by food particles trapped inside the grinding chamber or stuck in the drain. These particles can rot and produce unpleasant odors that linger. While flushing with baking soda and vinegar or ice cubes can help, a plumber can perform a deeper cleaning and inspect for buildup in hidden areas that DIY methods can’t reach.

Leaking Disposal

Leaks can occur at various points in the garbage disposal system such as the sink flange, dishwasher connection, or discharge drainpipe. Water pooling under the sink or signs of mold are typical indicators. Leaks can damage cabinets and flooring if not addressed quickly. A plumber can locate the source, reseal or replace faulty connections, and test the system to ensure it’s watertight.
